Is a GPS Watch Worth the Price?

 At the end of the day, only you can decide whether this kind of technology is the right thing for your purposes. An important point to consider is why you train. If you’re working out purely for keeping fit or stress-relief, you may not care what distance you’ve moved or at what speed. But if you’re training for any type of a race, a GPS watch can provide you with lots of information that can help you improve your workout program and do your very best while racing.

Below are some of the main reasons why I use a GPS watch in training:

1. Knowledge of Distance = Freedom

Before I started using a GPS watch in my training, I had two to five routes that I ran again and again. There were a few loops and a few “out-and-backs” on paths with distance markers along them. Today, I literally throw on my watch and run anyplace I feel like being. I believe that this is one of the best parts about having a GPS watch. It has zero to do with improving your athletic abilities, but a lot to do with exploring more ground. I’ve been to more of my own town after I purchased my GPS watch, and I’ve also used it to do spontaneous workouts in many other cities. Because I don’t have to pre-plan a route, I can explore neat and new things and still reach my mileage goal for the session.

2. Knowledge of Pace is Very Helpful

You know the saying “in order to race fast, you need to train fast”? Well, it’s true, but your body also needs easier days to recuperate after the fast ones. Being able to know my pace instantly has been extremely valuable to me on both hard and easy runs. If anything, the biggest thing that I’ve learned is that I have a tendency to run a bit too fast on recovery days. My training has improved quite a bit since I’ve realized this. I now run a bit easier in recovery sessions, saving my energy for the harder runs. Of course, this pace data is also extremely helpful for competition. I personally find it extremely difficult to pace myself at the start of a race, and my GPS watch provides information that allows me to not go out too fast.
